(Vinay Patrika - 174)

To those whom Rama and Sita are not dear,
Leave them, even if they are among the very close and extremely dear ones, as like they are equal to billions enemies!

For lord, PrahlAd disowned his father (Hiranyakashipu), and so rejected, Vibhishan his brother (Ravana), and Bharata his mother (Kaikeyi)!
Demon King Bali renounced his Guru (Shukracharya), and Gopis left their husbands (for taking side of lord), and they all became the very source of bliss and auspiciousness (blessings).

Till wherever there are friends (Suhrid), and beloved relatives & worshipable people (Susevya), they are [all] respected in accordance of their relation to and fondness of Shri Rama. (It is in relation to Shri Rama alone that all kith and kin are worthy of love.)
What good is the eye-balm (relations with other) that destroys the eyesight (our love and relation with Shri Rama). what more could be explained for this!

He who kindles affection (love) for the lotus feet of Lord Rama (the supreme personality of godhead) in You, is the most benevolent, venerable (worthy of worship), and (should be) dearer than (our own) life itself!*
This is my humble opinion!

*Whoever kindles the love and devotion in lotus feet of Janak-kishori and Shri Raghava Rajkishore in heart, is the most benevolent, and should be treated dearer than our own life!.

Actually, This Pada was composed by Goswami Tulsiadas as a reply to the letter written by Meerabai as a request to him (Goswami Ji) to guide her. Meerabai was a great devotee in Ramanandi Sampradaya, she was the disciple of Guru Ravidas (Raidas) Ji.

letter of Meera:

(Mīrā's letter to Gōsvāmī Tulasīdāsa Jī)

Svasti Shri Goswami Tulasidas Ji, the benevolent, and the benefactor of blessings and happiness! I make salutations in your lotus feet again and again, please, destroy my host of grief and sufferings.

My all family members (in-laws), whoever there are in my house, are always creating troubles over my association with saints, and in my devotion (Bhajan), which causes intense sadness (& sufferings) to me.

Since my childhood, I have made friendship with Giridhara (Shri Krishna / Shri Rama), so the bonds of attachment with him developed too strong to break now!

For me Hari-Bhaktas are like equal to my parents, therefore, I beseech You to explain (instruct) me what would be proper for me to do now (in such circumstances)!

Goswami Tulsidas Ji's reply to Meera:

Goswami Ji composed and sent Vinay-patrika Pad 174 (quoted above) as a reply to Meera. He told those who cause trouble in our devotion towards Bhagavan Shri Shri SitaRama, they must be renounced even if they are very close and extremely dear ones, as like they are equal to billions enemies! All our relations towards beloved and respected ones should be in accordance with Lord Shri Rama. It is their relation to and fondness of Shri Rama alone (the deciding factor) that all kith and kin are worthy of love.

Goswami Ji gave examples of true devotees how they left their extremely dear and respectables ones to tread on the path of love towards Shri Rama. A Jiva makes many temporary relationships with many people in his many births, however our relation with Shri Rama alone is true and eternal.

पितृमातृसुतभ्रात्रदारबान्धवादिसंगमः।
प्रपायामिव जन्तूनां नद्यां काष्ठौघवच्चलः॥

Relationships we enter into with mother, father, children, siblings, friends, and wife are just as fickle (temporary) as animals meeting coincidentally at the waterhole or driftwood in the flood (perhaps never to meet again).

Goswami Ji has written very clearly in this regard in Shri Ramcharitmanas, who should be loved most:

उमा राम सम हित जग माहीं। गुरु पितु मातु बंधु प्रभु नाहीं॥
[Manas, 4.12.1]

O' Parvati, in this world there is no such friend like Rama, neither preceptor (Guru), nor father, nor mother, nor brother, nor any other family member.

In Valmiki Ramayana, Mata Sumitra instructs Lakshmana Ji to think Shri Rama as your father and Shri Sita as Your mother and serve them!

रामं दशरथं विद्धि मां विद्धि जनकात्मजाम् ।
अयोध्यामटवीं विद्धि गच्छ तात यथासुखम् ॥
[Valmiki Ramayana 2.40.9]

Know Rama to be Dasaratha, Your father. Look upon Sītā the daughter of Janaka as myself, your mother. Consider the forest as Ayodhya and depart happily, my son!

Thus Goswami Ji gave conclusion of all Vedic-scriptures to Meera to take learnings from life-story of devotees like Prahlad Maharaj, Vibhishan Maharaj, Bharat Ji, Bali, and Vraj-Vanitas, etc.

Prahlad: The father of Prahlad maharaj was Hiranyakashipi who was averse towards devotion of Bhagavan Vishnu. Prahlad Maharaj was used to chant 'Rama' Naam, His father Hiranyakshipu threatened Prahlad to stop chanting Shri Rama Naam. However, Prahlada Maharaj didn't obey his father, and continued to chant Rama Naam. Hiranyakashipu made several attempts to kill Prahlad, and in the end Bhagavan Shri Rama appeared as Narasimha and killed Hiranyakashipu to protect Prahlad.

Vibhishan: Vibhishana Ji was a great devotee of Shri Rama, He was younger brother of Ravana who kidnapped mother Sita. Vibhishana requested his elder brother Ravana to restore Bhagavati Sita to Shri Rama, and ask forgiveness from Shri Rama as well as Maa Sita. Upon this, Ravana insulted Vibhishana in full court-room in front of his ministers. So Vibhishana Maharaj immediately left his evil elder brother Ravana who was averse to supreme Lord Rama, and surrendered in lotus feet of Bhagavan Shri Rama. Bhagavan Shri Rama made Vibhishana king of Golden kingdom Lanka after killing evil Ravana.

Bharat: There is none a brother like Bharat. Bharat ji is the greatest devotee of Bhagavan Shri Ram. When Bharat Ji return to Ayodhya from his Nanihal (his maternal-uncle's place), and learnt that his mother Kaikeyi sent his dearest Lord, Shri Rama in exile, in forest for 14 years, in order to coronate her son (Bharat) on the thone of Ayodhya, He was tormented with extreme grief. Then, in extreme grief, He abused and reproached his mother in many ways, and broke-away the mother-son relationship to keep his devotion into lotus feet of Shri Rama intact.

Demong King Bali: Bhagavan Vishnu took the incarnation of a short Brahmin called Vamana-incarnation carrying a wooden umbrella, and He went to the king Bali to request three paces of land in order to restore Indra's authority over heaven. Sukracharya, the preceptor of daityas and King Bali warned Bali that Vishnu himself has come in guide of Vamana, a Brahmin child, to ask from you, don't consent to donate even if he asks just three paces of land. After learning, none but the lord of all the worlds, Bhagavan Vishnu himself is asking something from him, then he should donate! Thus, Bali disobeyed and disowned his guru Shukracharya and consented to donate the land covered in three steps of that short Brahmin boy, Vamana. Vamana then revealed his identity and enlarged to gigantic proportions to stride over the three worlds. He stepped from heaven to earth with the first step, from earth to the netherworld with the second. Now Vamana was to still left to keep his third step. King Bali, unable to fulfill his promise, offered his head for the third. Vamana then placed his foot and gave the king Bali immortality for his humility.

Vraj-Vanitas (Gopis): Gopis were the lovers of supreme personality of Godhead, Bhagavan Shri Krishna. So they disobeyed the commands of their husbands not to meet Shri Krishna.

Thus, everyone should love Shri Rama most, and respect and love others in accordance of their relation to and fondness of Shri Rama.
